John Kurfis & Independence Day

It’s taken me years to allow myself to develop my music. I’d allowed all of life’s other priorities to take priority. And in all that time, I kept hearing that voice inside, felt a vague dissatisfaction and growing frustration that has only been addressed by giving myself and my music attention and time. And what a ride this has been! At every step,  I felt unsure of myself and uncertain in this new world I was finally allowing myself to explore. I can say now that it’s been worth every step and I’m just getting started. Join me on this journey. It’s gonna be fun.

So after many years thinking about making a record…. I’ve made a record. I hope this can be an encouragement to anyone out there. Follow your dream and do your art. So if you’re reading this…. I say… “Get your art out”!

As I may have mentioned I fell in love with the guitar after listening to Terry Kath’s solo in South California Purples at Carnegie Hall performance. Check out this YouTube clip of his song. His solo start around 5:46 into the song and the goes until the end. 10 minutes of pure guitar performance backed with the bass of Peter Cetera and drums of Danny Seraphine. I think I listed to this song 10,000 times as a kid. It started my interest in the guitar.

I was talking about Terry’s guitar playing to one of my studio guitarists (a younger kid) and he said something like…. is that that guy that Hendrix loved??? I smiled and said yep, it was…. then of course I told him “The Story”.

Fast forward to 2016 though… and it was finally time to get the songs out of my head, off of the scribbled barely legible pieces of paper in a folder and to get recorded.

I am always in search of “that chord”  “That progression” that will marry perfectly with my lonely lyrics that are sitting on the paper waiting for this music to come rescue them into a song. I normally cannot “make this happen”, I can’t work on writing a song. It comes at the most unsuspecting moments.  I’m a noodler on the guitar, my inspiration always comes from noodling. Or hitting a wrong note that turns out being right! Lol
Oh, and I write songs that I like. Makes sense, right. In fact I love to listen to my stuff. I joke that I am my biggest fan.

Thanks are in Order to the following:

Terry Kath
Chicago (The Band)
Dawayne Bailey
Chris Cotter (Tribe Sound Records)
Brian Davis – Session Guitarist and collaborator
